Alert (Warning)

We have vulnerable patients and those whose immune systems are compromised in our hospitals.

We need to protect these patients and others, so, we are asking everyone (staff, patients and visitors) to wear masks in our emergency department and urgent treatment centres.

We are also reminding those who feel unwell to please avoid coming into our hospitals at this time.

If this isn't possible, please wash your hands on entering the hospital, wear a mask at all times and avoid touching your mask. If you need to adjust your mask, please wash or gel your hands immediately afterwards.

Here, emergency care consultants work 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our team of medical and nursing staff work hard to assess and treat all patients who attend.

The Northumbria hospital provides emergency care for seriously ill and injured patients

This hospital treats serious emergencies such as:

  • Suspected stroke
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Persistent and severe chest pain
  • Sudden shortness of breath
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Severe blood loss

All patients are assessed and triaged depending on the severity of their condition. Patients with the highest clinical need are seen first, rather than time order. Patients may be admitted, discharged or referred to an Ambulatory Care service.

It is advisable to call 111 prior to attending the emergency department as there may be a service more suited to your needs.  If your condition could be managed elsewhere, you may be re-directed to a different location.
