Our continence service provides advise and support for day time wetting, toilet training and constipation in North Tyneside. We also provide a home delivery service for continence products for children aged 5 and over who have a physical or learning disability that causes bladder or bowel problems.
Your care
We aim to provide products to help children and young people with a physical or learning disability and their families to manage incontinence.
A child or young person’s bladder or bowel problems must first be fully assessed by a school nurse or health visitor, and a treatment plan started before we are able to provide incontinence products.
Our home delivery service is for continence products for children aged 5 and over who have a physical or learning disability that causes bladder or bowel problems and is offered when treatment programs have been unsuccessful.
For children with complex needs our specialist continence nurses can carry out individual assessments following a referral. This is currently only for children with a North Tyneside GP .
We also provide parent/carer group sessions and training to share information and advice on continence strategies including bed wetting and constipation.
Preparing for adulthood
When a child is between 16 and 18 years old, their school nurse will assess and discuss with you if they still require continence products when they become an adult. If so they will work with the community nursing team who will be responsible for their care once they are 18 to make them aware of what is needed. They will also contact us so that we can update your prescription.
You can be referred to the service by your GP, school nurse or health visitor.
You can also order products from us online following an assessment.
