Recovery rate best in country for North Tyneside Talking Therapies
North Tyneside Talking Therapies ranks top in the country for its recovery rate in September, according to national NHS scoring system.
The NHS Talking Therapies for anxiety and depression programme uses patient reported, clinical outcome measures to understand how an individual's symptoms change over time. A person has moved to recovery if their symptoms at the start of treatment are above a clinically defined threshold, and then below that threshold at the end of treatment.
The recovery standard is one of the main metrics used when looking at the effectiveness of the care delivered by Talking Therapy teams up and down the country.
North Tyneside Talking Therapies is a service delivered by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, to help adults who live in North Tyneside and are registered with a North Tyneside GP.
The team provides evidence based psychological treatment for anyone experiencing a common mental health condition that impacts on their daily life. These may include stress, depression, anxiety, panic, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and post-traumatic stress.
The service also provides specialist support for people with long term conditions such as COPD, heart disease and diabetes to help with anxiety and/or depression related to this.
NICE recommends a range of psychological therapies to treat people with depression and anxiety disorders and bring them to recovery.
The government has set a target for at least 50% of people who complete Talking Therapies treatment to recover.
Lindsay Diston, Operational Services Manager for North Tyneside Talking Therapies explains: “To be ranked the best in country in terms of recovery rate performance is fantastic recognition of the commitment of our staff. Patient outcomes and feedback demonstrate just how important the work is that they do for the local population.
“This service really is a lifeline for those who need it, people come to us with varying mental health conditions, and we find the treatment most appropriate for them. Now more than ever, in the current landscape we would encourage people who are starting to feel like they are struggling, to come forward and get the help they need. Getting support at an early stage has a positive impact and prevents things getting worse”
Marion Dickson, Executive Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals, adds: “We want to support our communities to live well, both physically and mentally. The North Tyneside Talking Therapies service helps us to do just that, tailoring the care it provides to meet the needs of each person who is referred in. I just want to say a huge well done to all of the team members who work incredibly hard across the patch.”
Following a public consultation Improving Access to Psychological Therapy (IAPT) services have been renamed as NHS Talking Therapies for anxiety and depression. The NHS Adult IAPT programme began in 2008 and aims to implement National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidance for people with common mental health problems.
