SAS Week 2024 - Dr Gemma Horn
My name is Gemma. For the last year, I have worked as a SAS doctor in Hexham’s Urgent Treatment Centre. I graduated from Dundee Medical School and completed my foundation years in Scotland. I finished 2 years of core surgical training in Edinburgh before moving to the Northern Deanery to do ACCS emergency medicine. After CT3 I left the training programme to spend some time travelling then returned to a clinical fellow role in A&E. This progressed into a permanent SAS position that lasted for several years.
During my career, I’ve spent time as a prehospital doctor at sporting events mainly motorsports. I also completed a Postgraduate Diploma in medical education. Being a SAS doctor has enabled me to continue developing my skills such as teaching and experience many different areas of medicine. As a trained mentor, I now also have the chance to become a clinical and educational supervisor to further utilise the experience I’ve gained.
Being a SAS doctor has provided me with many career opportunities and has also allowed me to build a stable work life balance, which is vital for healthy living and mental wellbeing. As a single parent with a young son, I am able to progress in my career and manage ‘Mum’ life successfully. I am enjoying my role as a SAS doctor in Northumbria, and I am excited about the prospects and opportunities available.
