Celebrating our AHP workforce - Ajmal shares his story
My journey into the world of radiography began in Karunagappally, Kollam, Kerala, where I was surrounded by a family of radiographers, including my elder cousin and two younger cousins. As a child, I was captivated by the intricate workings of the human body. While my elder cousin was studying radiology, I would visit him and learn about CT and MRI scans, seeing the fascinating images of CT scans of the abdomen and MRI scans of the spine. This early exposure ignited my determination to pursue a career in radiography.
After completing my education, I worked as a part-time anatomy lecturer while simultaneously pursuing my goal of becoming a radiographer. I eventually landed my first role in Kerala, followed by a position in Oman, and now, I am proud to serve as a radiographer in the United Kingdom.
As a radiographer, my primary responsibility is to perform imaging procedures, including X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs, to assist in diagnosing various medical conditions. Each day presents new challenges, from ensuring patient comfort to accurately capturing the images needed for diagnosis. It is a role that demands technical expertise, attention to detail, and strong communication skills.
I chose radiography because it allows me to see what others cannot, giving me the unique ability to diagnose and help save lives. The combination of technology and patient care makes this profession both interesting and fulfilling. I take great pride in knowing that my work directly contributes to patient outcomes.
One of my proudest moments occurred in 2019 while working as a CT radiographer at Ernakulam General Hospital. One night, a patient came in for a CT brain scan, and I identified an intra cranial hemorrhage (ICH) with midline shift. Recognizing the urgency, I informed the duty doctor immediately, leading to the patient's swift transfer for treatment. Months later, I was approached by the same patient, who thanked me for saving his life. That moment filled me with immense joy and pride, reinforcing the significance of the diagnostic system and my role within it.
I firmly believe that radiographers are the unsung heroes of healthcare. Our work ensures that patients receive the necessary diagnoses that can save their lives. Each day, I strive to provide the highest quality care while maintaining safety for my patients. One personal story that stands out was when I assisted a patient who was extremely anxious about their procedure. By taking the time to explain the process and reassure them, I was able to significantly reduce their stress. This positive interaction not only made the procedure smoother but also highlighted the importance of compassionate care in radiography.
Lastly, I recognize that delivering excellent patient care is a team effort. I can't provide the best service without the support of my colleagues. When I face challenges during my duties, my team steps in without hesitation to help. Good teamwork is crucial to ensuring that we provide the best possible treatment and care for our patients.
