Academic teaching and management careers
The trust is affiliated to the University of Newcastle and provides a substantial amount of teaching to medical students throughout the new curriculum.
Our teaching commitment has increased substantially, with the expansion of undergraduate medical student numbers from 201 to 340 per year. We are also the lead trust for the Northumbria Division of the Faculty of Medicine at Newcastle University and one of four base units coordinating, directing and developing teaching of students.
Every year around 70 students spend their entire stage 3 within the Northumbria Division and spend time with us. Undergraduate teaching for student selected modules in stage 4 and final year students already takes place throughout the trust.
Haltwhistle in west Northumberland to provide expert care to predominantly elderly patients requiring inpatient support following illness. It is part of the town’s health and social care scheme which is one of the first facilities of its kind in the country to provide hospital and social care support under one roof.
As part of our ongoing programme of investment, our general hospitals will all see development over the coming years as we look to improve privacy and dignity for our patients and enhance ward environments and experience for those coming into hospital for planned care.
We also have a specialist training centre at Hexham General Hospital which runs training courses in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery to surgeons across the UK and Europe.
We have a dedicated clinical trials facility at North Tyneside General Hospital and in 2014 opened the ‘Synexus North East Research Centre’ at Hexham General Hospital as part of our clinical trials partnership with Synexus.
