Transforming healthcare globally

Northumbria Healthcare shares knowledge and expertise to transform healthcare globally.

Our international programme spans over two decades, beginning in 1999 through a research link with Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) in Tanzania.

Through the partnership, our staff can get involved in projects to help improve the quality of local medical services in Tanzania.

Teams visit KCMC to undertake project work on the ground and provide support from afar, delivering online training and facilitating fellowships in our hospitals and healthcare services, for example. Our partnership’s successes include the introduction of laparoscopic surgery and strengthening anti-microbial stewardship in Tanzania.

In return, our staff - from both clinical and non-clinical services - gain vast experience of delivering healthcare in a remote environment, being exposed to different cultures and collaborating on major global health challenges – all in a day’s work.

Many of our staff have greatly benefitted from their international volunteering experiences which have boosted their leadership skills. As an organisation, we are fully committed to continuing to support our staff as part of our ongoing international partnership work.

Our work with KCMC is part of our commitment to support communities at home and abroad, alongside staff development opportunities. Our Bright Charity team helps manage the partnership, but it is not funded by the charity.
