Maria ClementDr Clement has been a consultant paediatric anaesthetist in Newcastle since 2010, and clinical director for health Inequalities, for Newcastle Hospitals since 2021.

Dr Clement undertook her undergraduate medical training and career start in anaesthesia in Trinidad, West Indies. She then continued her training in the Isle of Man; Glasgow; the North East of England; and finally, at Toronto ‘Sick Kids’.

As a vocal advocate of equity and inclusion, Dr Clement lectures locally about health inequalities, and speaks nationally for the group Civility Saves Lives™. She uses those speaking opportunities, as well as team coaching, to promote understanding, and to drive change for patients and staff so that every individual feels valued, welcomed, and cared for.

Dr Clement is passionate about safeguarding the physical and mental wellbeing of all healthcare staff, and practises and teaches compassionate leadership.

In her leisure time she enjoys travel, theatre, concerts, and afternoon tea.

Dr Clement’s ambition is to make the NHS a place where safety, equity, compassion, and civility are at the heart of how we care for patients, and for one another.
