Our Northumbria Health and Care Academy is now open

In June, we welcomed our first cohort of trainee nursing associates to our brand-new state-of-the-art facility. The £32m development features a training centre of excellence for nursing, midwives and allied health professionals.

Working in partnership with the University of Sunderland, the new facility is a key part of Northumbria Healthcare’s strategy to support the ongoing training and career development of staff while attracting and retaining new healthcare workers.

On Saturday, 10 August, 2024, we will be hosting an open event for those interested in applying for the second cohort for the trainee nursing associate apprenticeship programme.

The event will take place between 10am and12pm on the middle floor of the academy building opposite The Northumbria hospital. It’s open to both existing Northumbria staff and external candidates.

Exciting news – we have the green light to deliver our non-medical prescribing (NMP) programme

We are excited to announce that our non-medical prescribing programme has been approved for delivery at the academy by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), further contributing to the vision of providing accessible educational and professional development for our people.

The start date has been agreed as September 2024 for the first programme. Upon successful completion, the candidates will be awarded the prescribing qualification which is a recognised professional qualification by the NMC. Candidates will choose to study at either level 6 or level 7, receiving 40 university credits to enhance their academic portfolio.

The successful approval by the NMC, with no conditions attached, to deliver this established University of Sunderland programme at the academy is a fantastic achievement for the team. It reflects their dedication to providing the highest quality education, enhancing the experience to make it the best for every student.

Our Northumbria Health and Care Academy opened in June 2024 on the site of the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington.

Here you can receive off-the-job training and clinical skills sessions as part of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

An ambitious partnership with the University of Sunderland means a series of academic programmes and apprenticeships are being developed to enhance the skills of healthcare staff. The partnership means the Academy is the first facility of its kind in the North, and just the second in the country.

The academy is based on the first floor of the building with a separate entrance to the ground-floor GP surgery.

Rooms and conferencing

Our academy has 4 large classrooms which seat 20 people cabaret-style or up to 50 lecture-style. All four classrooms have movable partition walls for flexible classroom sizes, accommodating up to 200 for conferences or large events. There are 4 smaller classrooms which accommodate 10 to 15 students. All classrooms have a full video conferencing set-up, interactive c-touch teaching screens with digital whiteboards and links to SMOTS observation cameras in simulated clinical practice areas of the academy.

We have a large breakout area with two pods for single-person use and multiple seating areas.

We have a fully resourced and staffed library with 12 adaptable sit/stand workstations which will offer skills sessions on referencing, essay-writing and study skills for all programmes associated with the academy.

Students are entitled to apply for a car parking permit at our academy. This permit entitles you to park in an available space in a designated staff parking area. A permit does not guarantee a parking space. Staff are required to pay for parking and charges are levied according to staff pay grade and hours worked.

There are disabled parking bays at the front of the Academy building which can be used by any student with a valid disabled parking badge.

There are electric vehicle charging spaces which can be used for up to four hours by those with a valid staff parking permit. There is a cost associated with these charging points and payment is set up via the provider app.
